Birthday Cake Process Art

When a soon-to-be birthday girl asks to paint for her birthday, you make that happen. For Charlotte’s 3rd birthday we followed her only request and threw her an art party. One of the highlights was the “Decorate a Cake” process art station. Everyone took a turn and many came back again and again. I will be repeating this for other occasions as well.

I have to give the credit for this idea to Meri Cherry. I found this activity through her Instagram and instantly fell in love. If you are a fan of process art you have to check them out for all the inspiration.

How to Make Your Own:

You’ll want to gather some large boxes. I asked around and collected an assortment. Using Duck Tape, secure three boxes together creating the layered “cake” look. Then spray paint the “cake” white creating a blank canvas. If your boxes are colorful you may need several layers. I ended up using an entire can of spray paint per cake. Then you’ll just need to allow for dry time.

Invitation to Create:

You’ll have lots of options here. Since this was a party for a 3-year old, I was sure to use washable non-toxic paint. We supplied a set of Crayola Washable Paints to paint with along with many brushes and sponges. We also had an assortment of colorful pom-poms to add. I had planned to set out colorful feathers as well but it was a bit windy so I decided to skip them. Some other ideas would be: bits of yarn or ribbon, fabric scraps, stickers, stamps, sequins or glitter. The possibilities are endless.

You can check out the whole process in our reel here. So there you have it. If you are looking for a unique addition to a birthday party the Birthday Cake Process Art comes highly recommended!
