Nature Egg Suncatchers

Nature Egg Suncatchers

This may be my favorite nature art activity we have shared so far. I mean…how beautiful did these turn out?? Even more impressive is they were created independently by a two year.

I was surprised with these gorgeous flowers from some of the best friends ever. They dried just as beautifully as when they were fresh. When the petals started to fall I knew I would repurpose them in some way (am I the only one who keeps every flower arrangement until they are falling apart??) The flowers looked so beautiful together that I could envision some artwork being created. So the arrangement was deconstructed for the nature pieces seen here. I tried to keep some pieces in tact for exploration but many of the petals were falling before so there was a combination of both.

Being spring with Easter quickly approaching, I have eggs and spring items in the front of my mind. So I ran with it here too. I used some recycled cardboard to cut egg-shaped frames. Contact paper was attached to the frames sticky-side up. This created an adhesive center to the frames.

Once the materials were accessible, I took a step back and let Charlotte explore freely. She explored with the pieces. She spent time touching all of the petals, leaves and flowers. She pulled some of the flowers apart and some leaves crumbled in her fingers. She stuck pieces purposefully and sprinkled others randomly. She played with the arrangements until she was satisfied with her nature artwork.

This is the beauty of process art. The goal is to have freedom to explore with materials and let the process unfold as it goes. There is no specifically desired outcome but rather the outcome of experimentation and inspiration. This is exactly how young children approach art. Unfortunately, many times children are taught to follow an example and shy away from their own creative ideas. It has been a mission of mine as a parent to always follow the child whether it is in art, play or other interests.

The final step was to display the suncatchers proudly. Charlotte chose a window in the dining room as the perfect spot and here they rest for all to see. It will be the perfect addition as we host Easter dinner this year.

We would love to see your own versions of nature suncatchers too. Be sure to tag us on Instagram or Facebook to share with the community. Happy creating!!
