How to Set Up:

Begin by identifying the area you would like to transform. If you wish to keep the shop contained to a specific area be sure to identify these boundaries by design or through discussion prior to play. Excitement and imagination easily take over and the play may venture out of this area if not identified prior. Some ideas for spaces include a playroom, bedroom, dramatic play area, mud kitchen or outdoor area.

The banner may be strung together and hung on a wall or table edge. It could also be glued to a poster board or wood for a custom sign. Provide a table, bench or a workspace. Area will be needed to display the props and for checkout. Allow for a workspace to arrange the flowers and complete orders. The signs can be placed throughout to provide guidance on spaces.

When setting up the space, keep your audience in mind. You can set this up on your own to surprise your little ones. If a disruption of their space could be uninvited, include them in on the process. Allow your children to have ownership and a voice in their space. You could provide the props and allow them to set it up as they envision. Working together while talking through each step could provide bonding time. Get into character as you become florists and business owners to add to the excitement.

Props to Add:

You can make a shopping trip for props or use your creativity to incorporate items from around the house. Some ideas for both are: vases, flowers, trays or baskets can be added to bring it all together. Look around the house for vases or use cups and jars. If you prefer, these can be found at thrift stores and dollar stores fairly cheap.

The menu allows for orders to be wrapped in tissue paper or placed on a wreath. Wreath forms can be found at the dollar store but as seen in the photographs, forms can be created from recycled cardboard as well. Holes could be added to push the flowers through or twine can be used to hold the flowers. Tissue paper or fabric can be used to wrap the flowers. Pillow cases can be substituted to wrap a bouquet and tied with ribbon for a beautiful display.

The flowers can be fake or real. Wildflowers in the summer, bouquets from a farmer’s market, or fake flowers from the dollar store can be used. Take it a step further and get the kids involved. Add in an art project to create your own flowers from felt, paper, or fabric.

The ideas for implementation can take many different routes. The pieces of this set can be laminated for durability to use again and again. Our Valentine’s Day Flower Shop materials will be reused again this summer when dandelions and wildflowers are in bloom.
