Peek A Boo Body Parts
Eyes, nose, mouth...and repeat. We are full on facial feature naming over here. You know, the fun stage of baby fingers in your ear and pushing into your eyes and mouth. Now that Charlotte is beginning to verbalize each feature it is a little more exciting. It makes the discomfort a little more tolerable anyway. It’s the price of vocabulary acquisition I suppose.
I have been saving various lids from empty wipe packs and puff containers waiting on the perfect use. I know, I know I have a bit of a hoarding problem. When reading our “Fingers and Toes” book (By Parragon Books) Charlotte has begun pointing to her own nose and saying “nose.” Immediately I started racking my brain on how to reinforce these skills. I thought back to having seen others put pictures of people under lids and thought I could recreate this but with body parts.
I began by finding various pictures I had of Charlotte on my phone. I cropped the selected photos to feature each body part. I chose eyes, nose, mouth, ear, hands and feet as those were the most common we’ve gone over. I printed them out on typical printer paper. I measured them under the lids and cut them to size. After arranging them on a piece of cardboard, I used clear book tape to attach the photos. Then, I labeled the lids for each feature. I used hot glue to glue the lids over the photos.
Overall, it was pretty simple to put together. I allowed some time to dry. To present the board I set out our Fingers and Toes book along with a mirror. I also added the book “I See You” by Eric Carle *. Each page of this book includes a mirror within the illustrations. Charlotte enjoys looking in the mirrors to see her reflection. It only took a few modeled tries before Charlotte was able to independently open and close the lids.
Together we open a lid, name the body part and locate our body parts to match. She still enjoys poking my eyes and pulling my ears but hearing that sweet baby voice name her torture makes it tolerable. I just wince and cheer her on with a reminder to be gentle. ♡
