Five Green Speckled Frogs Felt Play

Felt play is bringing our book and song to life in a unique way. Placing the frogs along the log allow for counting and manipulation as the story and song progress. We added some SumBlox to offer a tangible manipulative to serve as a visual.

The felt props allow for the child to independently retell the story over and over again. We began by playing with the board as it hung on the wall. This offered the added benefits of vertical play. (Read more about vertical play and it's benefits here) When the Sumblox were added Charlotte (2 years old) wanted to stick the blocks to the board as well. I took her lead and moved the board to the floor so she could interact in a new way.

The frogs and log were cut from basic felt pieces (similar to the ones here). I hand-stitched the pieces together. If you are not comfortable sewing then glue could be used to attach the pieces as well. They were fairly simple to create and have provided lots of fun. Of course they have been hopped all around the room and back to their "pool where it was nice and cool."

Interesting in creating your own felt board? It may be easier (and cheaper) than you think. Check out our tutorial on how to DIY your own felt board here.
