Color Themed Learning Unit
I am thrilled to share our latest Themed Learning Unit all about colors! As I noticed my toddler using color words when speaking and playing, I knew I wanted to dive into some color themed play. When creating this resource, I wanted to include activities that both young toddlers and older children could access.
You will find variations of play as well as tips on how to adapt the presentation of materials to meet the needs of various ages and developmental levels. While focused on the theme of colors, your youngster will strengthen their early literacy, math and science skills along the way. You can download your copy of the unit here.
Literacy:
Letter Recognition: Capital and lowercase letter cards are included in the unit. These resources can be used as flashcards, hidden for a letter hunt, or placed within a sensory bin. They can also be used to match upper and lowercase letters.
Phonics: Pair the letter cards with objects around the house for hands on phonics practice. Match the letters based on beginning or ending sounds.
Building Words: The letter cards can be used to build words. Use word family chunks to create rhyming words.
Color Word Recognition: Color flashcards are also included with this unit. The color graphic can be separated from the word to create a matching activity. Color words are included as sight words for students to recognize readily. An 8x10 color resource guide is included both with and without labels.
Handwriting: The handwriting cards can be used to help your child practice writing their letters. These cards would be perfect for a writing station. Using a page protector or laminating the cards would make them reusable with dry erase markers.
Math:
Matching: Color cards for matching games are provided along with directions for four levels of play. The resources will grow with your child as they master various skills. Get your child moving using our color hunt. Locate items around the house or go on a nature walk to make colorful nature discoveries.
Sorting: Sorting mats, smaller color cards and tips for using materials you have on hand are included to practice sorting skills.
One to one correspondence: Step by step directions and game boards are included for a one to one correspondence game. Use the numeral cards within the unit or a dice to change the play.
Numeral recognition: Numeral cards are included along with the capital and lowercase letter cards. Number themed flashcards were added for counting practice and numeral recognition.
Patterns: Pattern resources include extending a pattern and creating a pattern. Using patterns is also tied into one of the science experiments.
Science and Art:
Color Mixing- Observe color mixing while conducting a science experiment using absorption. The unit provides step by step directions along with a short materials list.
Creating a rainbow- Using a pattern of colors and easy to find materials, you will wow any youngster with this simple experiment.
The ideas above are suggestions on how to use the resources within the Color Themed Learning Unit. There are more detailed explanations within the resources themselves. However, many of the resources are designed to be open ended. This allows you creative freedom to use them in a variety of ways.
You can download your copy of the unit through our Etsy page here.
