Seek and Match

This activity pairs a sensory experience with early math skills. Once set up, challenge your little one to uncover the cards and match them to the set on the table. Be prepared that they will want to repeat the process over and over.

Seek and Match is an activity that is sure to grab your youngsters attention! This activity pairs a sensory experience with early math skills. It allows you to easily reinforce content while having a blast doing so.

To set up you will need the following:

  • A set of matching cards: Select an appropriate amount of cards based on the level and age of the child. Our 22 month old has just begun to show an interest in colors. Keeping her age and developmental level in mind, we selected four colors to begin with.  The cards pictured here are from the Color Themed Learning Unit. You can see an overview of the whole unit here. The product listing is live on Etsy now.

  • A sensory bin or tray: Place one set of the cards on a table or where the child can easily access them. Place the pairs on the bottom of an empty sensory bin.

  • Sensory material: We had colored rice on hand and chose to use this as our sensory medium. Any dry sensory material could be used for this activity. Cover the cards in the sensory bin with your sensory material.

  • Brushes or scoops: Provide sensory tools to use when uncovering the cards.

Once set up, challenge your little one to uncover the cards and match them to the set on the table. Be prepared that they will want to repeat the process over and over. The rice will end up being mixed to create a beautiful rainbow rice that can be reused for other sensory play activities.
