Making Taste-Safe Rainbow Foam

This foam is a great option if you are beginning to introduce sensory play and your little one hasn’t mastered the “not everything goes in your mouth” lesson yet.

This taste-safe foam is so much fun to play with, and I am speaking for myself just as much as I am my kids. I love that it is taste safe so if my little one sneaks a lick there is no need to panic. This foam is a great option if you are beginning to introduce sensory play and your little one hasn’t mastered the “not everything goes in your mouth” lesson yet. Even if your kids are older, this foam is definitely still a hit.

To make the rainbow foam you will need:

  • Canned Chickpeas/Garbanzos: You will need the liquid from the cans of chickpeas not the actual chickpeas. Drain the liquid into a mixing bowl and set the chickpeas aside for lunch (I love to add them to the top of salads!). For the rainbow foam pictured here, I used two cans.

  • Cream of Tartar: Add ¼ teaspoon of cream of tartar per one can of chickpea liquid. Add this to the mixing bowl with the drained liquid.

  • Mixer: Mix the ingredients using a mixer set on high. I used a handheld mixer here. You will see the consistency change and it will take about 4 minutes to get this super fluffy looking foam.

  • Food Coloring (optional): You can be creative with the coloring of your foam. If you want to make separate colors you will need to separate the foam and add the coloring individually. I separated the foam into fourths then added 4-5 drops of food coloring then mixed with a spoon.

  • Tub or Container for Play: As I finished each color of foam, I layered them side by side in our container for play.

  • Tools and Bowls: You could add any sensory tools or loose parts to add to the play. I kept it pretty simple for our first try, adding a few scoops and bowls.

We took our rainbow foam outside since it was a beautiful day. It did get a little messy but nothing that couldn’t be wiped up inside. At one point, little hands did fling some of it when trying to pick up the tools. I could see where that may leave a bigger mess.
