DIY Coin Box

There are many engaging toys and learning resources that you can DIY for a fraction of the price without foregoing the benefits. We created our own version of the popular Montessori inspired coin box.

This activity helps develop object permanence (knowing an object is there even when you can’t see it) as well as hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. I repurposed a shoe box by cutting a hole in the top and cutting coins from recycled cardboard. To present the activity I placed the coins in a tray with the box next to it.

I let Charlotte explore the new materials in her own way. Later, I modeled how to place the coins in the hole and after looking for them I lifted the shoebox from the lid to reveal them. Then I left Charlotte to play and discover on her own again. I just loved watching her curiosity and wonderment while engaging with this activity.

The level of continued engagement was well worth the time (and no money) I put into setting up for her. Let me know any tricks you have down below or tag us on Instagram, @playbeyondthelines!
