"Five Little Snowmen" Felt Story and Rhyme
Getting back to all things snow we broke out our “Five Little Snowmen” Felt Play. We were able to practice counting and naming colors along with our rhyme. This one has been a favorite around here for years.
To create the snowmen,
I cut out three white circles per snowman. Then I cut the hats and eyes from black felt, the carrot noses from orange felt and the scarves from various colors. I purposefully selected a different color for each snowman to add in practice with color identification. I just eyeballed the size and shape of each piece. You could print off a picture of a snowman for a size pattern if needed though. I used yellow felt to cut out the sun. To assemble, I simply glued it all together using Elmer's Glue All. I tend to sew felt pieces together but this set has held up surprisingly well with glue.
To begin the play,
Place all five snowmen on the felt board. If you do not have a felt board, the pieces can be spread out on the floor or tabletop. Our felt board was a super easy DIY! You can find the step by step tutorial for that here. When the snowmen are displayed you can take the time to practice naming the colors or asking for your child/students to identify the snowman with the blue scarf etc. For young ones you can use this time to model or provide the colors throughout the activity.
The rhyme we use for our “Five Little Snowmen” is as follows;
“Five little snowmen in a row
Five little snowmen made of snow
Out came the sun and stayed all day
And one little snowman melted away”
As a snowman melts away, we remove one snowman and place it in the basket. We like to count the remaining snowmen before beginning the next round of the rhyme. Then we continue counting and repeating the rhyme until all of the snowmen are in the basket. Then the process is repeated again (and again and again and usually again). While saying the rhyme, my kids have created their own movements. We tend to hold up the number of fingers to match the number of snowmen. We also raise our hands in a circle when sun comes out and wave our fingers down as the snowman melts away. There are lots of ways to make it your own. No matter how you create it, it is sure to be a hit with your littles. Interested in making your own felt board? Check out our DIY Felt Board here.
