Lungs Model
Using a printed lung resource, straws, balloons and few rubber bands we were able to create an interactive model of the lungs. We can physically inhale and exhale into the balloons to see them inflating and deflating just as the lungs do inside our bodies. The random balloons selected from the bag must have varied elasticity. One side seems to stretch much easier as air is blown into it. It was not intentional but worked out to our advantage. Our left lungs are smaller than our right lungs in order to make room for our hearts.
We took this model a step further by referencing the process of respiration. We also used our hands to act as the diaphragm, helping the lungs fill and pressing to help exhale fully. This model provided the perfect interactive visual to bring our learning to life.
The lungs printable, along with step by step directions, are available as part of the Human Body Themed Learning Unit. Your copy of the unit is available to download on Etsy now.
