Sand Dough

One way to bring the beach back home is sand dough! We collected a bag of sand from the beach to bring back home with us. Does anyone else do this or just me?? In the past, we have used our collected sand to make ornaments and keepsake jars for some DIY souvenirs and we have used it for sensory play.

Our first activity with our collected sand this year is a batch of homemade sand dough and it has been a frequented activity. The sand adds a unique texture that differs from typical playdough. We added some of our shells, rollers and a few other elements for play. All three ages have visited this set up repeatedly.

Follow the recipe below to make your own sand dough!

Materials:

* 1 cup all purpose flour

* 1 ½ cup sand

* ¼ cup salt

* 1 tbsp cream of tartar

* 1 tbsp oil (I used vegetable oil)

* ¾ cup hot water

Instructions:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, sand, salt, cream of tartar) in a large bowl.

  2. Add the oil and water to the dry ingredients and mix well.

  3. Use your hands to knead the dough. The dough should be soft and pliable. If it is still sticky you can add more sand or flour.

To Play:

The sand dough will have the same properties of typical playdough, just with a gritty texture. You can play with it just the same as you would with playdough. We enjoyed playing with sea elements such as stamping with shells, making patterns and making beach scenes. The dough is fun to just squish and mold in your hands as well.
