“What’s in our blood?”

We’ve begun a study on the amazing human body. To narrow our focus, we are working our way through the major systems by reading, using online resources and participating in hands on activities. Be sure to check out the entire series of activities to extend your learning.

To begin our study, we are focusing on the circulatory system. I set up this sensory tray to take a closer look at our blood. We talked about plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. We read about their functions and learned how important each one is to our well being.

TO CREATE:

- The red blood cells are represented by red water beads.

- The white blood cells are represented by ping pong balls.

- The platelets are represented by red felt.

- Viruses and a cut/wound were cut from felt.

When first presented, we talked about each component and how they work together to keep us healthy. They added the virus, then had the white blood cells join together to attack it. Next, the cut was placed in the tray and the platelets joined together to clot the blood. Not only was it informative but the sensory aspect of the tray was a hit for all three of the kids.
