Colorful Shadows
These colorful shapes have to be some of my favorites. We created bugs and basic shapes but the possibilities are endless with the many variations you can make.
TO CREATE:
Recycled Cardboard (Recycled boxes are perfect for these!)
Tape
Scissors
Begin by deciding on your design. For these shapes, I wanted to keep it simple. I drew a basic square, circle and triangle frame on a cardboard box. I typically hold on to used shipping boxes for recycled play so I was happy to put them to use. Using a craft knife I cut the shape frames out. Next, I measured the cellophane to cover the frames and cut the pieces to size. Then I simply taped the cellophane to the back of the frames.
Our favorite way to use the shapes have been taking them outdoors on a sunny day. We go for a walk while casting colorful shadows on items along the way. The different colors can be layered to create new colors. We like to experiment holding the shapes at different angles to see the differences in the shadows casted. If outdoors, we have noted where the sun is in the sky and have revisited it throughout the day as the sun’s placement has moved. My oldest was really intrigued in using the sun to tell the time of day.
Back indoors, we have used the shapes on a light box (see our DIY lightbox here). I love that it changes the shapes’ use. When not in use, we typically store them on a window sill. As the sun shines through the window, colorful shadows appear in the room.
